Project # 8: Crowdsourcing

Draw Me Define Me Website

For this project I wanted to create a crowd-sourcing project that would demonstrate how much of our preconceived notions of people are based around physical appearances and social status. The way this site would work is that users would submit brief descriptions of themselves but omit information pertaining to physical, racial and social attributes. Other users could then draw a portrait based on the descriptions. Ideally there would be multiple portraits submitted per description and visitors to the site would be able to view different artist's interpretations of the same descriptions.

Man With A Movie Camera: The Global Remake

To view the my video in context with the original, click here.

This (short!) video was created to participate in the project "Man with a Movie Camera: The Global Remake. This was shot with a Canon 7D and edited with Final Cut Pro.

Young Me/Now Me

The upper photo was taken during my brother's first birthday. I was really into those pajamas. The picture underneath was taken for the site "Young Me/Now Me." My brother will turn 16 in about 2 months. I have submitted the photos to the site and am awaiting approval.

Reading Assignment 5: Participative Systems & Crowdsourcing: The Art of a Crowd.

Question # 1: Jacob states "As socially minded artists work to make their projects more inclusionary and bring those usually outside art institutions into their work-through subject matter, non-institutional locations, or actual involvement by nonarts participants-many from the art world audience flee; a substitution rather than expansion of audience occurs." Why do you believe this problem occurs? How would this audience expansion problem be remedied?

Question # 2: Carol Strickland states in her article "Crowdsourcing: The Art of a Crowd" that other drawbacks of crowdsourcing involve "cloudy issues of intellectual property and authorship." For crowdsourcing projects, how important do you believe authorship is? Should the artist who conceived the project get the majority of credit, or should the people who contributed also receive credit as artists?

Assignment # 7 part 1: Online Intervention

I originally wanted to redesign Heartbeat International's Website, but after receiving feedback in class, I decided to run with the idea of a "new and improved" Planned Parenthood site, if Planned Parenthood was taken over by Heartbeat International, a top crisis pregnancy center network.

The original, unedited Heartbeat International site:

Assignment # 7 Part 2: Real Life Intervention

For the real life part of this assignment, I decided that opening a dialogue with people about a sensitive topic would increase understanding on both sides. This set piece can be placed in any public space.

Project #7 part 1 - sketch

Reading Assignment # 4: Tactical Media (Electronic Mediations) by Rita Raley

Question # 1: Do you feel generally optimistic about the effects of tactical media, or do you agree with Lovink and Rossiter's pessimistic views that tactical media is too "short-termism" and "little more than a temporary glitch?"

Question # 2: What are the advantages of tactical media's temporary nature? What are the benefits of tactical media's unpredictable outcomes?
